Start the game with a positive attitude. Gambling players must be friendly towards their opponent right from the start or else, they should not expect them to be nice towards them. Being nice to your backgammon opponents may even bear fruits. Studies show that gambling players tend to play it more softly when their opponents are nice during the match.
It is not enough to start a gambling game with a positive attitude. More importantly, gambling players must end it in the same manner, win or lose. It is almost imperative for losers to act this way to show good sportsman conduct. You don't have to praise your opponent if you don't want to, just appreciate the match. You should be thankful he played with you in the first place.
You should also say things clearly, especially when you are raising the stakes. This is to minimize confusions and arguments later on. Be sure that your opponent hears what you are saying, or else, your action or call may be considered null and void.
Gambling players must not forget to proclaim their score after the game is finished to keep track of things. Do not expect anyone else to do the tracking for you. Wait for your turn before you shaking your dice. Most gambling players do not want distractions when they are making their moves, so do not distract them with the noise of your dice-shaking.
